Leather Bags - Care & Storage

Helen Kaminski uses fine quality leathers to create a unique range of accessories. Leather is a natural product and variations in colour, surface and texture are inherent qualities that will become more characteristic with use. The intrinsic variations of leather should not be mistaken as faults. Care should be taken to prolong the life of leather products:
• Keep your accessory away from sharp, abrasive or rough surfaces to prevent scratching.

• Avoid wearing light coloured clothing with dark coloured leathers. Light surface marks and dull patches can often be blended using a clean dry light-colour cloth rubbing gently in a circular motion.

• Refrain from overfilling or exposing your accessory to water, as this can distort the shape and reduce strength.

• Should the leather become wet, wipe away excess water with a clean soft light-colour cloth. Pack loosely with paper towels and allow to air dry naturally in a well ventilated area.

• Avoid direct heat or prolonged exposure to sunlight as this can discolour and harden the leather. Helen Kaminski recommends specialist advice from reputable retailers when using any form of leather care products. Test a small non-visible area of your accessory before use. When not in use, store your accessory in the Helen Kaminski cloth bag to protect the surface of the leather from dirt and marks.

Cleaning And Care

The Helen Kaminski Knitwear Collection
Deluxe Silk Lace and Cashmere Cable Knit hats and scarves can be hand washed in warm water and laid flat to dry. Do not tumble dry. Do not bleach. Cool iron, if necessary. Dry Cleanable (P). To protect your knitwear we advise avoiding sharp or rough surfaces.

Raffia Hats and Bags
Use a small amount of water to spot clean only as required. Do not use chemical cleaners as this may stain the raffia and cause discoloration. As raffia is a natural fibre, colours may soften over time. We inform our customers at the time of purchase with information hangtags of this potential variation, which is a characteristic of natural
materials.

Caring For Velour Fur Felt Hats
Velour fur felt hat should not be dry cleaned or washed under any circumstances. Should your hat become marked or stained, a firm bristle suede brush may be used to diminish the appearance of marks or stains. Always use the brush in the direction of the nap of the fur. Velour fur felt should not be worn in the rain.

Raffia with Leather Bags, Canvas with Leather Bags
The leather used in this Helen Kaminski design is created by a vegetable based tanning process. The natural tanning method does not conceal the inherent marks and variations of the leather that make each bag unique.

Colour Changes
The natural colour leather is intended to deepen when exposed to light over time. Should the colour become uneven, exposing all areas of the leather to light will even out the colour.

Water Contact
As a result of this tanning method, leather will spot when in contact with water. Should leather become water stained, use a clean cloth lightly dampened with cold water to even out the colour. Allow the leather to air dry. DO NOT USE HEAT. The leather can then be softened by gentle handling.

Brim Width Classification:

Short Brim: Under 7.5cm

How to Measure Your Head:
A crown brim junction (CBJ) measurement is the circumference of your head. Wrap a tape measure over the central forehead area and around your head to mimic the natural position of a hat, just above the browline and ears.

Hats With Raffia String
Crown sizes can be marginally increased as follows:

Slightly dampen the raffia crown from the inside of the hat with water spray, and allow water to absorb for five minutes;
Untie the raffia string, put hat on and mold over your head to achieve the desired fit;
Remove hat and allow it to air dry. Once the hat has dried completely, it will retain the desired size.

Hats can be made to fit smaller by tightening the raffia string around the hat to suit desired size.

Hats With Inner Head Bands
Hats can be made to fit smaller as follows:

Pinching the inside head band near the back of the hat to reduce the circumference of the band by the desired amount. If significant adjustment is required, it may be necessary to adjust the band in two places.
The adjusted band can be secured by hand tacking with needle and thread. The reduced band circumference will allow the hat to sit comfortably on your head.

Raffia Hats With Neoprene Band
The neoprene band with logo is intended to be worn at the front of the hat for your comfort. The neoprene can be wiped clean using a damp cloth to remove make-up residue.

Packing Other Fabric Hats and Nappa Braid
Fold the hat and roll gently. Pack rolled to help retain the shape.

Packing Raffia Braid, Velour Fur felt, and Organdy hats
Pack for travel by placing the hat upside down in the suitcase. Fill crown and support brim with soft articles to help keep the shape. Avoid crushing the crown or brim of the hat.

Raffia Hat Reshaping - Raffia Crochet, Raffia Braid & Woven Hats & Bags (Unlined Product Only)

Packing and handling will result in a softening of this natural fibre over time. You may use the following method to reshape and reactivate the natural resin that provides flexibility and resilience to your raffia accessory:

Hold over steam (a kettle or saucepan works well) where reshaping is required. Apply steam only to the underside of hats or the inside of bags.
Allow the steam to penetrate the fibre so that it becomes warm and pliable.
While still warm, use firm hand movements to restore desired shape. It helps to wear the hat or stuff the bag during this process. Hold in desired shape until the item cools.
Once the hat is cool and desired shape is achieved, allow to air dry completely away from direct sun light.
Hat brims will regain their shape, body and support and crowns and bags will retain the shape created.

Raffia has a natural resistance to water but is not waterproof. If raffia becomes water soaked it will lose a considerable amount of body. In this case the following method may be useful in restoring your accessory:

Allow accessory to dry completely.
In the case of a crown or bag stuff fully with a small towel to desired shape.
Use a steam iron on low to medium heat and lightly press into shape being careful to not over press or scorch.

Rolling Fur Felt Hats

'Rollable' Fur Felt hats can be rolled for easy packing, storage and transport by using the followingmethod:

positioned above the top of the visor (Figure 1 & 1a)Roll the visor in towards the center, keeping the ribbon and elastic above the top of the visor
(Figure 2)
Wrap the ribbons around visor (Figure 3) the elastic band must be over the top edge (Figure
3 a)
Secure the visor by tying a bow or knot (Figure 4)

Rolling Raffia Braid Visors - After packing care

Unroll the visor and allow it to sit for 10 minutes so brim can unroll its shape

Rolling the visor from the other side for a few minutes to even out the appearance of the brim
Manipulate the visor brim firmly to even out the shape
Use a steam iron on low to medium heat and lightly press into shape being careful not to over press or scorch

UPF 50+ Information

UPF 50+ is the maximum Ultraviolet Protection Factor accorded to sun protection hats by Australian, New Zealand and US Government rating agencies. The UPF rating indicates how much Ultraviolet Radiation is absorbed by the FINISHED HAT. For example a HAT with a UPF Rating of 50 only allows 1/50th of the hazardous ultraviolet radiation falling on the surface of the HAT to pass through it - or expressed another way, the HAT blocks 98% of the sun's harmful UV Rays. This means that, where it is protected by the HAT, the HAT will reduce your skin's exposure to ultraviolet radiation by twenty times.
